this is a soufflé of quiet majesty. A mushroom soup is equally splendid, managing
to be both light and gutsy, while Stornoway black pudding with bubble and squeak
and a deep-fried egg is pure Cumbrian comfort by way of Lewis.

There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side
of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with
shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb,
four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s pie, one bite
of pure ovine brilliance.

Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully
sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake District is
famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé, this time
the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot of sticky-toffee sauce to
pour deep into its molten centre. This is good old-fashioned food,
immaculately done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering.
It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

It is not clear when Apollonia’s relationship
with Prince began or ended as he was dating another one of
the stars of Purple Rain during the making of the film,
Susan Moonsie.

Prince and Beyonce famously joined forces onstage at the 2004 Grammy
Awards, performing a medley that included his iconic 1984 single Purple Rain. 

Their duet also included her fan favorite number Crazy In Love,
which saw him accompany her on the electric guitar.

Afterwards, Prince gave an interview in which he shared his appraisal of Beyonce’s
musical abilities when they worked together.

‘I was really curious as to how much she knew musically,

Fleck (Joker) and Lady Gaga as Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn),
faced negative reviews from critics before its October 4 release and flopped
at the box office.

Tim, 39, who played a guard at Arkham Asylum in the movie,
said Todd Philips’s new film has ‘no plot’ and admitted he

Speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Tim said: ‘It’s the worst film ever made.

The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s
top spot, but less than projections, and half that of its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth,
in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as divisive as people are making it out
to be. I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as
a meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’

Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024.

Politicians’ preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline’s
exclusive invite-only ‘Chairman’s Lounge’.

Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports – are suitably discreet.

Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of
wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants.

Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing
the views of everyday Australians, unlike
the two-party-dominated system in the United States. 

The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe
Rogan  complaining that Americans were ‘completely trapped in the two-party system’.

‘We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that’s happening in Australia at the moment, which
is the rise of independents,’ Crowe countered.

‘The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to
bring a non-party-line series of points to the
argument.

‘And it’s working well. It’s working for us. In that it’s making both
of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for.

Rogan mused ‘we could use that here, for sure’, highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties.

There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and
Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison.

Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to
perform well on occasion.

Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take
five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom
Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly
racist platform but with only a million votes.

The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald
Trump. 

He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump’s incoming cabinet. 

Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party.

The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the
2000 election under the banner of that movement – formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes.

Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy
Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party
candidate – carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William
Taft.

Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from
the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition

This situation is helped by a strong Green party
who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.

huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election

Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are
fiscally conservative have been labelled ‘teal’ candidates.

This is because they have combined their ‘green’ views
on climate with the traditional ‘blue’ approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics.

Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney’s northern beaches at the 2019 election.

In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh
Frydenberg at the 2022 election. 

She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house
crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines.

Crowe’s three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced
in teal social media adverts.

They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court,
who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some
teal candidates.

Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals,
however.

Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney

And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal
parliament as the MP for the regional far north
Queensland electorate of Kennedy. 

Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles
and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia.

The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late
2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the
Indigenous Voice to Parliament. 

The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house – the highest proportion of non major
party MPs since Federation in 1901.

Following her panned performance in the flop movie Joker: Folie à Deux,
the New York City native, 38, is releasing a single titled Disease,
set to be released Friday.

Diesase, the first of songs from her forthcoming seventh album, was teased
Tuesday on the Grammy-winning artist’s Instagram account, as she captioned the image:
‘DISEASE 10.25.’

In a teaser clip from the viewpoint of an approaching vehicle, the actress-singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta,
sported a black mane as she ran from it.

Gaga’s label Universal Music on Monday put out pre-saves for the forthcoming
single, with links to Spotify and Apple Music, Variety reported.

SHANGHAI, Oct 9 (Reuters) – China’s yuan held steady against the U.S.

dollar on Wednesday, as investors awaited more stimulus from
the world’s second-largest economy and the Federal Reserve’s September meeting
minutes due later in the day to gauge its policy path.
The dollar held steady, giving some relief to the yuan after a sharp rally to
a seven-week high last week.
Spot yuan opened at 7.0650 per dollar and was last trading 12 pips
lower than the previous late session close at 7.066. Prior to the
market opening, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) set the midpoint rate, around which the
yuan is allowed to trade in a 2% band, at 7.0568 per dollar, only 3
pips weaker than a Reuters’ estimate.

China’s blue-chip CSI300 index dropped for the first time since
Sept. 13, poised to snapping a 10-day winning streak, after officials on Tuesday failed to offer much
new on stimulus plans to revive the economy. The yuan is down 0.7% against the dollar so far this month, due to broad dollar
strength, but the currency has 0.5% firmed for the year-to-date.

China equities’ recent rally has raised the bar for an upside surprise from expected fiscal stimulus news, said
UBS strategists led by Rohit Arora, adding that the offshore yuan’s near-term
risk reward is unattractive. “Historically, fizzling of China equities’ spurts acted as a bigger drag on CNH vis-à-vis the tailwinds from equities’ surge,” the strategists said.

Nevertheless, market participants are still awaiting additional stimulus measures that
could help further lift China asset sentiment.

Citi FX traders think the offshore yuan could
trade well if local equities remain supported, similar to what happened in Nov.

2022 – Jan. 2023, according to the bank’s note
to clients. The offshore yuan traded at 7.0682 yuan per dollar,
up about 0.09% in Asian trade. The dollar’s six-currency index was 0.039% higher at 102.53.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author
dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV
and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over
what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his
book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister
‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by
personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime
Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got
upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas
trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to shoot
the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former
Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations
he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to
him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before
Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the
first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response
gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures
and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack,
Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the Prime Minister
‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s
blaming me and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about, which is,
did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you were the Transport
Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his
credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get this far.
I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say … anyone who
reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.

This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the
aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here
trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book is
about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the
public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and
sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost
every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister
(I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever
seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like
to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to
be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a
very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get
upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket
is converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to
the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat
and the only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end of planes during his time as a travel journalist,
and understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced
the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars
and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of
the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

after the film received a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score
for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews

Joker notably opened with $96.2 million on its theater release
in 2019 and eventually took a little over $1 billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Phillips
– had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget more than doubled to around $200 million for
Folie À Deux. 

The sequel screened during the Venice International Film Festival last month, where it earned
a 12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.   

It had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the
number drastically dropped amid mixed reviews before release. 

Audiences have since shared their opinions on the sequel, which features multiple musical sequences. 

‘Joaquin Phoenix don’t deserve this,’ wrote one on X. ‘What happened to
the script?’

Another user added: ‘Stop making sequels as musicals if the original wasn’t a musical.’

than anticipated U.S. roll out of its IQOS heated tobacco device, a choice analysts said was positive for its competitors in the short term.

The New York-listed Marlboro maker also said it aims for more than two
thirds of its net revenues to come from “smoke-free” products by 2030, up
from 50% in 2025, as it tries to transform its image from a cigarette purveyor to a driver of the shift to healthier alternatives.

Investors have been closely watching IQOS’ entry into the U.S., the world’s largest market for nicotine products, and
had been expecting it from May 2024 next year. Reuters reported on Wednesday that PMI is hiring lobbyists across a host of key U.S.
states ahead of the launch.

Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said IQOS would launch in four cities in two unnamed U.S.
states from 2024, but a national launch would only come after
PMI receives approval to sell the latest version, known as IQOS
ILUMA.

The company was planning to apply for approval in October and expected it
from 2025, he continued.

“We need to warm up the tyres,” he said of the initial launch, which would help PMI fine tune its approach.

A national roll-out of ILUMA would follow but in phases, he continued, adding launching in 10
states in the first year would make sense.

Meaningful traction for PMI’s heated tobacco products in the U.S.
“now looks delayed until ILUMA,” Owen Bennett, equity analyst
at Jefferies, said in a note, adding this was a positive for PMI’s rivals.

Olczak also signalled that PMI’s push into non-nicotine products
was no longer a priority. It recently scrapped an ambition for
$1 billion in net revenues to come from sales of such products by 2025.

Instead, PMI will focus its resources on IQOS and nicotine pouch brand ZYN, Olczak said, adding it had been too optimistic around acceptance of big
tobacco companies operating outside of nicotine.

PMI also announced updated medium-term targets including for revenue and earnings per share, and ambitious volume targets for IQOS and ZYN.

ZYN and other oral nicotine products in the U.S. would help drive
an expected $2 billion in revenues there in 2024,
even before IQOS ILUMA, executives said.

Lady Gaga is set to release her seventh studio album
in February.

Despite lead single Disease stalling on the Hot 100 at No.
27, the 38-year-old is forging ahead with her next album,
which she described as both ‘fun’ and ‘darker.’

Speaking to Vogue magazine about the project, Gaga said that she’s
been focused on the production side of her
new songs. 

‘I love producing — I always have — and something that was really important to
me making my seventh studio album was blending live instrumentation with programming,’ she explained.

Do Greens and crossbenchers who claim that transparency and
integrity is at the heart of their reason for entering Parliament in the first place hear themselves?

In the past few days they have mounted self-serving arguments against proposed electoral reforms that the major parties look set
to come together to support.

The reforms include caps for how much money wealthy individuals can donate, caps
on the amount candidates can spend in individual electorates to prevent the equivalent of an arms race, and a $90million limit on what any party can spend at an election – actually less than the major parties currently spend.

The proposed new laws also include lower disclosure thresholds for donations, thus increasing the transparency of who makes political donations
in the first place.

So the wealthy wont be able to hide behind anonymity while using their cash to influence election outcomes – and the extent to which they can use their
wealth at all will be limited.

The bill will further improve transparency by also increasing the speed and frequency that
disclosures of donations need to be made.

At present we have the absurd situation in which donations get made – but you only find out
the details of who has given what to whom many months later,
well after elections are won and lost.

In other words, what is broadly being proposed will result in much
greater transparency and far less big money being injected into campaigning
by the wealthy.

Teal Kylea Tink claimed the major parties were ‘running
scared’ with the policy and warned the reform would ‘not stop the rot’

I had to double check who was criticising what exactly before even starting to write this
column.

Because I had assumed – incorrectly – that these important transparency measures
stamping out the influence of the wealthy must have been proposed by the virtue-signalling Greens or the corruption-fighting Teals, in a united
crossbench effort to drag the major parties closer to accountability.

More fool me.

The bill, designed to clean up a rotten system, is being put forward by Labor and is opposed by a
growing cabal of crossbenchers.

It makes you wonder what they have to hide.

They are aiming for implementation by 2026, giving everyone enough
time to absorb and understand the changes before preparing
for them.

Don’t get me wrong, no deal has yet been done between Labor and the Coalition. I imagine the opposition want to go over the
laws with a fine tooth comb.

As they should – because it certainly isn’t beyond Labor to include hidden one-party advantages in the proposed design which would create loopholes only
the unions are capable of taking advantage of, therefore disadvantaging the Coalition electorally in the years to come.

But short of such baked-in trickiness scuttling a deal to get these proposed laws implemented, the crossbench should offer their support, not cynical opposition, to what is being advocated for.

They might even be able to offer something worthwhile that could be incorporated in the package.

To not do so exposes their utter hypocrisy and blowhard false commentary about being in politics to ‘clean things
up’.

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film, a new report has
claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady
Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros
Pictures – but was slammed by critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and
‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process
telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do
with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes
maybe $150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed
up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC
Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of

They don’t want to see the boss looking like he’s pissed off in the Monday newspaper.
So you’ve got to be cool about it.’ 

Souths fans – including Crowe – endured a torrid 2024 season, finishing 16th with a 7-17
record. 

Injuries and suspensions played their part but defensive frailties were the biggest issue, with the Rabbitohs conceding an average of
28.4 points per game – their worst since 2006.

The Rabbitohs have gone back to the future by sacking coach Jason Demetriou and re-instating former mentor Wayne Bennett

Souths fans will be hoping to see a fit and firing Latrell Mitchell
back on the park next season

Injuries compounded their struggles, with key players like Campbell Graham missing the
entire season and Latrell Mitchell limited to 11 appearances.

The season’s disappointments led to the dismissal of coach Jason Demetriou, with Wayne Bennett set
to return as head coach in 2025.

Looking ahead to 2025, the Rabbitohs have bolstered their roster by signing English halfback Lewis Dodd, Euan Aitken and Josh Schuster.
